Have you ever wondered how hard it is to put red lipstick on an 8 year old? Well if you have, or even if you haven’t, I found out and you’re about join me on a very frustrating journey!
The brief: ‘December is full dress rehearsal, so need to apply basic makeup at home – foundation, blush, brown eye shadow with white highlight and red lipstick.’
The above instructions were sent through by my daughter’s soon-to-be stepmum, which I think was taken directly from the ballet school newsletter. Not a huge amount to go on, but enough to form a basic idea in my mind of what was required. I was excited to do Isabel’s makeup as, up to this point, she has shown very little interest in cosmetics. Finally I was going to have an excuse to attack her with the war paint, and there was no way out of it.
The Look: (in order of application)
Bourjois Health Mix Serum Gel Foundation Light Beige + Sigma SS190 Brush = light coverage all over
Bobbi Brown Eyeshadow Bone + Sigma SS252 Brush = wash all over lids right up to brow
Bobbi Brown Eyeshadow Chocolate Shimmer Wash + Sigma Brush SS239 = coverage across lids only
Nutrimetics Defining Eye Pencil Charcoal + cotton swab = line upper lids and smudge lightly
Designer Brands Beyond Aplifying Mascara Blackest Black = apply to top lashes only
Benefit Erase Paste Fair + Sigma SS194 Brush + Beauty Blender = conceal dark areas under eyes and blend lightly
Bobbi Brown Blush Soft Pink + Sigma SS 168 Brush = concentrate on apples of cheeks and blend back and up to hairline
Nutrimetics Perfecting Lip Pencil Cranberry = line and fill in lips
Nutrimetics Hydra Brilliance Lipstick Geranium + Di Kennedy lip brush = coat lips and smooth lip line
Becca Fine Loose Finishing Powder Sesame + Sigma SS150 Brush = lightly dust all over face and dust lips through a halved tissue
Red Lipstick Tip The trick I used to clean up any mistakes around the lip line is to apply concealer using a flat edged brush and blend the outside edges slightly. I then split a tissue in two (which gives you 2 extra thin pieces), hold it over the lips and dust lightly with face powder, this helps to increase the staying power dramatically.
By the end of this makeup session I was exhausted. Putting red lipstick on a child who cannot keep their lips still, even if their life depended on it was rage inducing. Of course once I pointed this out to Isabel she started laughing and couldn’t stop, so I think I did a good job given the challenging circumstances. I might have made a few passive aggressive comments (well if you end up with lipstick all over your face, don’t blame me), so unlike me…not! Thankfully we got there in the end.
How did the client respond to the finished look? She pointedly told everyone she looked like a zombie; whether that is a good thing or not, I’m not sure. At the dress rehearsal she looked similar to the rest of the class (better if you ask me, her biased mum) and even after two and a half hours the lipstick remained intact. I’d say that makes it a success. Will she let me do her makeup again? I’m not counting on it. Share this post…
